Stop waiting: NetApp highlights the urgency of a cloud-neutral AI strategy

Businesses are shifting toward data platforms driven by artificial intelligence and guided by a cloud-neutral strategy. To further AI’s success, enterprises are prioritizing clearer insight into their data and stronger protection against cyberthreats.

The launch of NetApp Inc.’s new AI Data Engine comes into play with these trends in mind. Above all, it’s important to remember that AI is the first true hybrid worker, according to Gagan Gulati (pictured), senior vice president and general manager of data services at NetApp.

Gagan Gulati, senior vice president and general manager for AI, cloud and security at NetApp, discusses cloud-neutral strategy during NetApp Insight 2025.

NetApp’s Gagan Gulati talks with theCUBE about AI and cloud strategies.

“A lot of the projects today, they will start in cloud, especially when you’re doing pilots,” Gulati said. “Data gravity, which is where your actual sensitive data is — the data that’s actually going to be used at inferencing time, at run time — that pretty much will define where your AI is going to be. You’re going to basically bring AI to data.”

Gulati spoke with theCUBE’s Christophe Bertrand at the NetApp Insight 2025 event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed NetApp’s AFX system and its role in AI data infrastructure and the company’s cloud-neutral strategy across major hyperscalers. (* Disclosure below.)

NetApp’s cloud-neutral strategy explained

As organizations bring AI to the data rather than moving data to AI, strategy will need to keep pace. Data infrastructure and platform must support enterprise needs across all environments, whether data resides in on-premises data centers or in hyperscaler clouds like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, according to Gulati.

“Our partnership really helps there because we are natively built in all three of them, helping our customers out,” Gulati said.

Studies show that the vast majority of AI projects never make it to production because AI is inherently data-hungry. Achieving the right AI model requires providing it with the right data, according to Gulati.

“If the data itself and the data infrastructure itself is not ready, your AI is not going to be ready. That’s a fundamental problem,” he said.
