BMW AG’s artificial intelligence and data platforms now serve as the backbone of its global production and logistics operations. These systems power mission-critical workflows — ensuring cars such as the new iX3 are manufactured, shipped and delivered with precision.

BMW’s Marco Görgmaier discusses the company’s process intelligence approach with theCUBE.
One standout example is the company’s compliance with customs and international trade stipulations. Using Celonis SE’s process intelligence, BMW can now automatically track the provenance of parts and validate compliance at scale — significantly reducing manual effort and accelerating customs clearance, according to Marco Görgmaier (pictured), senior vice president of enterprise platforms and services, data and AI at BMW.
“The biggest change here was that we very much shifted from just process intelligence to object-centric process intelligence,” he said. “There’s been a mind shift there with our teams; now they don’t just go from use case to use case with more of a siloed approach … we’re heading into a global optimum in the company.”
Görgmaier spoke with theCUBE’s Rob Strechay and Savannah Peterson at Celosphere 25, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed BMW’s vision for becoming a truly digital enterprise — one where intelligent automation and human expertise converge to optimize operations. (* Disclosure below.)
Over the past year, BMW doubled the number of data sources connected to Celonis — now exceeding 500 — with over 120 active use cases, according to Görgmaier. The real leap, however, came with the move from traditional process intelligence to object-centric process intelligence.
“We have great experts, and we rely on this business and process critical knowledge,” he said. “Of course, we try not just to bring the technology in but create synergy between our technical teams, platform teams, the IT teams who build the business-specific applications and, of course, our business teams themselves.”
Instead of looking at processes in coccoons, BMW has created an overarching enterprise picture. By analyzing relationships between core business objects such as vehicles, parts or invoices, BMW can understand dependencies across divisions, enabling smarter decisions and faster optimization at scale.
“I think it’s the powerful combination of having the process knowledge and then leveraging the power of AI on top of it,” Görgmaier said. “That’s the combination we try to bring to life in the company.”
